WASHINGTON, DC – CASA in Action Electoral Director, William Renderos issued the following statement on the anniversary of the violent coup attempt held on the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021. The approximate losses suffered as a result of the siege at the Capitol totaled $2,734,783. More than 950 defendants have been arrested in nearly all 50 states and the District of Columbia, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office 24-month update.

“This country is on the precipice of an upcoming general election, with a portion of the American electorate wavering in its commitment to preserving US democracy: some voters still reject the presidential election results from 2020, and some took matters into their own hands to throw out the results by force. As I reflect on the two-year anniversary of such a violent attack on the Capitol, I wonder if history will repeat itself in this upcoming presidential electoral cycle. Our democratic institutions prove to be fragile when put to the test.

“In particular, we draw attention to Congressman Scott Perry and former President Donald Trump, both of whom played central roles in the January 6th riot. They are now under scrutiny in the investigations for their alleged involvement in subverting the 2020 election results.

“I am aghast that both are able to run for higher office — and represent constituencies — in this country. Not Scott Perry, Donald Trump, nor any other elected official is above the law. The principles of justice and accountability must prevail, even in the face of influential connections. Their alleged involvement in the events of January 6th, and subsequent attempts to hinder the electoral process, raise serious concerns about their suitability to represent the people of Pennsylvania and the nation.

Democracy is at stake, and we urge the electorate to consider the implications of supporting candidates with a tarnished commitment to the principles we hold dear.

“In the upcoming election, let us collectively work towards putting an end to this dangerous behavior and ensure that those who have undermined democracy are not given the opportunity to do so again. Our democratic values demand no less, and the future of our nation depends on the choices we make today.”

Three crucial aspects shed light on the alleged actions of Congressman Scott Perry and former President Donald Trump:

U.S. Constitution’s 14th Amendment: This powerful amendment, with broad legal implications, prohibits anyone who has engaged in insurrection after taking an oath to uphold the Constitution from holding office again. Rep. Perry and former President Trump’s alleged roles in disrupting the certification process on January 6, 2021, stand in direct violation of this constitutional provision.

Post-Election Text Messages: D.C. Circuit Court evidence cites messages allegedly sent by Perry following the 2020 presidential election, revealing efforts to target election results and other concerning texts and emails.

Unsealed Federal Court Ruling: Uncovered text messages, part of an unsealed federal court ruling, indicate Perry’s assistance to Trump in the aftermath of the 2020 election. Federal authorities seized Perry’s cell phone in 2022 as part of an investigation into attempts to overturn the 2020 election and President Biden’s victory.
