WOODBRIDGE, VIRGINIA – Last Friday, a group of Salvadoran community leaders published a full page letter in the region’s two largest Spanish language newspapers – Tiempo Latino and Washington Hispanic – urging voters to vote again candidate Yesli Vega given her history of attacks against immigrant priorities.
The letter, signed by 39 people including current and former Salvadoran-American elected officials, describe how Vega has supported policies that have resulted in deportations and family separation, such as the 287(g) program in Prince William County.
Instead, the letter’s signors call on their Salvadoran brothers and sisters to reelect Congresswoman Abigail Spanberger who has voted to provide permanent status to Dreamers and the 251,567 Salvadorans, among others, who have TPS.
“Congresswoman Abigail Spanberger has a demonstrated commitment to defending immigrants and working class families and we are working hard every day to make sure Virginia voters return her to Washington,” said Eduardo Zelaya, CASA in Action Virginia Organizing Director and a naturalized citizen originally from El Salvador. “We know Abigail Spanberger will continue fighting for CASA in Action members, people who are daily building the economy and strengthening communities across the commonwealth.”
