Immigrant Community Joins Fight to Re-Elect County Executive Calvin Ball; Calls to Support Question A and Healthcare Expansion

HOWARD COUNTY, MD — Weeks ago, CASA in Action’s board voted to endorse Howard County Executive Calvin Ball for reelection and has been mobilizing for his reelection. Today, members joined Ball to discuss what’s at stake for immigrant families this election. Members discussed two urgent priorities, protecting the Liberty Act and expanding healthcare to all, regardless of immigration status. Gubernatorial candidate Wes Moore was also in attendance. CASA in Action proudly endorsed Wes Moore, son of immigrants, for Governor and Aruna Miller, immigrant from India, for Lieutenant Governor.

At the event, Ball and CASA in Action members urged Howard County voters to vote to protect the Liberty Act, a bill on the referendum this election day. The act prohibits Howard County agencies from cooperating with the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. It would also prevent County employees from asking about the immigration status of residents, discriminating based on immigration status, and require that certain information related to citizenship be kept confidential in Howard County.

“Ensuring Howard County is and will remain a diverse, inclusive and welcoming county is an absolute priority,” said Calvin Ball. “This is why I signed the Liberty Act and will continue to combat discrimination. We also invested $1.3M in funding so that every woman, regardless of immigration status, has access to prenatal care, especially if they are uninsured or underinsured.”

“Calvin Ball’s work on the Liberty Act and reproductive health expansion has not gone unnoticed by CASA in Action members and the immigrant community at-large. Howard County residents will be supported by a candidate that will fight and advocate for them – not just in ending partnership with ICE, but also in ensuring every member of our community has access to healthcare. ” CASA in Action President, Gustavo Torres. “We are counting on his leadership to support our most vulnerable community members.”

“Calvin Ball will support the immigrant community in Howard County. We are proud to endorse him and get out the vote to ensure he keeps his seat as County Executive. His commitment to ensuring that our entire community has healthcare, regardless of immigration status, is critical and we look forward to ensuring his re-election,” said CASA in Action member, Luis Vivanco.
