ATLANTA, Georgia — Electoral mobilization champion CASA in Action enthusiastically announces its endorsement of Stacey Abrams for Governor of Georgia this November. Since her first bid for Georgia’s governorship in 2018, Abrams has been a vocal supporter of the state’s Black, immigrant and working-class communities. CASA in Action’s board of directors, who unanimously voted to endorse, is confident she can usher in a new era of empowerment for Georgia’s working families and communities of color.
“Stacey Abrams has spent the past four years championing the right to vote for Georgia’s Black and Latino communities,” CASA in Action Executive Director Alonzo Washington said. “We’re confident she’ll remain an invaluable partner for our communities of color in the fight to secure affordable healthcare, housing, and myriad opportunities for economic empowerment.”
Abrams’ platform is ripe with policy initiatives that aim to level the economic playing field for Georgians of color. Among these are proposals for an earned income tax credit that would give roughly 1 million working families a tax refund of nearly $300 per year; preventing corporations from underpaying and misclassifying their workers, and expansion of apprenticeship programs that would allow Georgians to hone skills for careers in the trades and technical fields.
After her narrow and contentious loss to Gov. Brian Kemp in the 2018 Governor’s race, Abrams founded a voting rights nonprofit that has championed measures including broader access to mail-in voting, a reduction in wait times at polling stations, and districts free of partisan gerrymandering.
Combined with CASA in Action’s previous endorsement of Bee Nguyen for Georgia Secretary of State — a dedicated defender of voting rights for Georgians of color in her own right — members and advocates can rest assured that these leaders will govern with a vision for prosperity and equity for working families throughout the state.
CASA in Action now has a complete slate of candidates for the top of the ticket in Georgia, and will continue mobilizing its field team to drive support for Abrams, Nguyen and Rev. Raphael Warnock for Senate in the Atlanta region and beyond.
“It’s well past time to end Republican control of the Georgia Governor’s Mansion,” CASA in Action Georgia State Director Luis Zaldivar said. “Our members recognize that Stacey Abrams presents an opportunity to have their voices heard unequivocally at the ballot box, and to have a permanent seat at the table in Georgia’s government.”
