Supporting the DREAM Act Means VOTING in favor of the DREAM Act
MANASSAS, VA (WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 10, 2018) – As hundreds of immigrants become vulnerable every week, Virginians are outraged by the lack of commitment from Senators Kaine and Warner on the DREAM Act. Both Senators were among a handful of Democrats who voted last December on the spending bill that did not include the DREAM Act.

But yesterday’s meeting on immigration with President Trump and Congressional Democrats and Republicans has strengthened our efforts as one issue was undoubtedly clear: everyone agreed that we must pass the DREAM Act now to give immigrant youth protection from deportation and a pathway to citizenship.

Community groups across the Commonwealth of Virginia – including immigrant rights groups CASA in Action and NAKASEC – are urging Senators Kaine and Warner to commit in voting in support of the DREAM Act.

“We are asking for leadership on the DREAM Act now. Senators Kaine and Warner had both stated their support on the DREAM Act, yet they failed us in December when we needed them. We are asking them not to fail us again,” stated Luis Aguilar, a DACA recipient from Virginia and organizer for CASA.”

Several actions are planned in the upcoming days including Congressional visits, phone calls and canvassing activities to inform Virginians on the positions of Senators Kaine and Warner on the DREAM Act.

“This month is vital for our undocumented young people and our families. We need congressional action now. Let’s put all the talk we heard yesterday at the White House in action by passing the DREAM Act before January 19,” stated Jung Bin Cho, a DACA recipient from Virginia and an Immigrant Rights Fellow with NAKASEC.
