CASA in Action Condemns Gov. Hogan for Trump-like Tactics in Fundraising Letter

ANNAPOLIS, MD. (Thursday, June 8, 2017) _ CASA in Action condemns Gov. Larry Hogan for his Trump-like efforts to sow division and scapegoat immigrants in a recent fundraising letter, demonstrating that the Maryland governor is in lock-step with the President Donald Trump and supports his right-wing, anti-immigrant agenda.

In a letter dated May 22, Hogan calls the state legislature’s push to protect immigrants from discrimination and unjust federal laws, an effort to, as he writes, “make our state a safe haven for criminals here illegally.”

“This letter shows his true colors,” said Gustavo Torres, CASA in Action’s President. “His xenophobic language comes right out of the alt-right playbook. His efforts to pass himself off as a moderate are clearly a sham and do not reflect how most Marylanders view immigrants.”

According to  a March Washington Post-University of Maryland poll, 71 percent of Marylanders say immigration enforcement should be the territory of federal authorities, while 25 percent say local police should take an active role in such matters.

Other state elected officials have also denounced Hogan’s language. Sen. Richard S. Madaleno Jr. (D-Montgomery County) said he was “deeply disappointed” that Hogan’s campaign would use “Trump tactics of dividing our communities and scapegoating immigrants” to solicit contributions for his reelection.

In his letter, Hogan also attacks Democrats for their support of the Maryland Trust Act. The bill, which passed the House but not the Senate, was an effort to proactively shield Maryland’s immigrants and Muslims from the worst excesses of a federal administration that swept into office with promises to target those communities.
